(I don’t know why Cotton-Eye Joe gets stuck in my head so easily. I haven’t heard it for 3.5 years, and yes I know exactly when I last heard it.)
After getting a call from Hidama last night and catching up for a while, I was reminded just how long I’ve been gone from Twitter and Tumblr. =p I’ve been around the internet, of course, and you’d be able to find me on Dreamwidth and Livejournal.
I’ve just signed up for a couple arts/craft classes at UWM this fall as well as an 8-week course in Spanish, to brush up. Applying to grad school at U of Minneapolis.
Lately I’ve been addicted to Big Fish Games and playing online. Fitz and Bubblez have been two of my favorites. They’re entertaining to play while watching the various series and movies I’ve been doing lately.
Knowing - AVOID THIS MOVIE. It’s awful. *facepalm* Mom watched it with me when we got it from Netflix and we both ended up chattering over the film and critizing it as we hit halfway through. Pfft.
Invasion (with Nicole Kidman) - Awesome! I recommend this movie. I’m a total fan of the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (’50s) and while I wouldn’t necessarily call this film a remake - as it doesn’t try to follow the same plot - it is most certainly based on it. The same sort of social commentary in the original film is present here, with an updated frame of reference.
Blindness - Recommended. But be forewarned, this is a very intense movie. Be prepared to see some of the worst of humankind, it’s damn rough. It’s a dark film, and some people might think that it drags. I found it to be a realistic interpretation of the situation.
Series: Harper’s Island - Holy crap! If you’ve got Netflix, hop on this! It’s available instantly. I was curious about this series, but wasn’t sure I was actually going to like it. But then, oh boy, I got hooked. I watched all 13 episodes within a day and a half. It was so hard to pause because damn. Horror-mystery show, and there were plenty of surprises. I absolutely loved it and it’s stuck with me for a couple weeks now. (W00t for Danny, Chloe, Cal, Sully, and Henry.)
Series: Leverage - Another show available instantly on Netflix, woohoo! I caught an episode while Phiremangston and I went to visit Ohmnom last month. It wasn’t like I was overly impressed, but I thought “why not?” Well, once I started watching I got hooked and so did my mom. It’s such a hoot and fun and intelligent. I like its similarity to films like the Oceans series and The Italian Job. (Hardison and Parker, totally fav characters.)
Series: Bones - Phiremangston has been talking about this most of the summer. I shrugged it off mostly since I hadn’t thought about checking it out before. Then as my summer shows started coming down to finales, I had another “why not?” moment. I’ve grown to love it and while I don’t think it’s the best show ever, I like to giggle at the social ineptitudes and enjoy the investigations. (I love Angela! I love Brennan’s jewelry.)
Shows that have finished for the summer, and have left me sad without their wonderfulness: The Closer (omg I love this amazing show), In Plain Sight, Burn Notice, and Royal Pains. Leverage is wrapping up, but at least Psych and Monk are rocking on. About Monk - I’ve actually liked it a lot this season! I usually get tired of the show, because he just bugs me too much after a while, but the cases have been great and the guest characters awesome. I really liked “Mr. Monk and the Foreign Man.”
In theatres: G.I. Joe made me laugh so much. Mostly I stuck to giggling and rolling my eyes since I went to see it with a 10yo friend. We had fun with it. It was so ridiculously predictable and I wanted to strangle everyone for taking so damn long to figure out that what the baddies were going to destroy in France was the Effiel Tower. (DUH!) I was rather weirded out with Christopher Eccleston with a Scottish accent. o_0
Julie & Julia - went to see it on my mom’s birthday and adored it. It’s a long movie, though! Kind of surprised about that. There’s a lot of laughs to be had, and it’s just very sweet. It took me about ten minutes to figure out that the actress playing Julie is the same woman in Enchanted (which I also recently watched and quite enjoyed).
So~ I think that’s all for recommendations for now. I’m still cross-stitching, taking a break from scrapbooking after doing a big book for Mom’s birthday gift, and I’ve played around with jewelry some more.
